RWS Opening Show
Discipline: Dressage
Horse: WHS Runaway
Rider: Julia Caine
Starting Number #003
Proof of dressage experience: .: Peppermint :.

Story: While everybody knew it would be hot at the RWS showgrounds and anybody had been prepared for it, the heat and dryness slowly were becoming unbearable for both humans and animals.
The dressage class was scheduled from 7 to 9.30 am on the first day of the show - at 7 you could already feel the sweat running down your back, the dogs did not even dare to leave the soothing cool of the houses and stables and were watching the sweating humans from their shady resting places.
Runaway was standing in his box rather uninterested in what was going on around him, barely lifting his head as his rider entered. His dark bay coat would make it even harder for him to compete in such heat, and his owner was well aware of that. Julia was at that point seriously considering scratching her stallion. Surely she'd been looking forward to this event, but the horse's wellfare was more important. Was Runaway really fit enough ? After all, he was a young stallion with barely any experience.
Julia caressed his neck and checked him for signs of illnesses, injuries and overheating. Luckily she found nothing that would make her doubt the stallion was ready to compete today. His eyes were clear, his ears alert, his legs and muscles near to a perfect shape. She giggled when the stallion tried to eat her ponytail as she was checking his legs and gently pushed him back.
Affirmed in her decision to at least try to start, she got Runaways tack and lead him out of the box to tack him up. The sun was now burning down on them, no fog was left to cover the ground from the heat of the already risen sun, and the stallion started to sweat between his legs and on his neck. The other horses were not in a better shape - and their riders looked even worse. Julia was pretty sure she'd get the sunburn of her life today.
At 8 o' clock it was finally time for them to enter the arena. The young woman mounted the big bay stallion in the shadow of a tree and sorted her reins. "Let's go", she whispered into Runaway's quickly moving ears.
